Ras Kisimani
Summary
Once a flourishing Swahili settlement on the southwestern tip of Mafia Island, Ras Kisimani served as a key trading hub between Africa and Arabia from the 12th to 14th centuries. Today, its quiet shoreline remains largely untouched, bordered by the sunken remnants of an old town slowly reclaimed by the sea. Its soft white sands and tranquil beach offer an ideal vantage point for sundowners -- and, with some luck, a glimpse of whale sharks at dusk.
